Brand Values: How We Are Changing the Industry
By Milly Hailstone
It’s pretty obvious that there is a lot of competition within the fashion industry. That’s why I opted to do something different. Instead of taking on a high-stress, high-turn over job, I decided to strike out alone and follow my vision.
Say No to Mass Consumerism
I didn’t feel comfortable conforming to the rest of the fashion world. I’m talking about fast fashion - thousands of garments exactly the same, made in a sweatshop. I didn’t want to make cheap, throw-away items. Why have a whole cupboard full of trash, when you can have a smaller amount of original and signature items?
With Straight Talk BN1, I want to offer people something they will feel proud to wear, something that will make a statement. Jackets that they will look forward to putting on before walking out the door, and patches that they can sew onto clothes that will make them as original and offbeat as they are.
What is Slow Fashion?
I consider Straight Talk BN1 to be slow fashion. That means that the brand doesn’t adhere to the industry’s typical seasons. Most high-street stores get new stock deliveries every other week, and because they are so accessible, these new clothes become unexciting, unoriginal and cheap copies of each other.
There is so much pressure to jump on the latest bandwagon or trend, that we’ve forgotten what it’s like to have a personal style. To tell a story through our clothes.
That’s why every Straight Talk BN1 garment has a personal touch. Whether it’s completely made from scratch or block printed, each piece of clothing is unique and special.
Why Lino Print?
I choose to use lino print because each print comes out slightly different from the last. It originates from the ancient technique of woodcut, which is a time-consuming but beautiful process. Instead of going down the screen printing route like a lot of brands, again I had to be different!
Even though lino print can sometimes feel a little rough around the edges, that’s exactly why I love it. It’s different, it doesn’t fit in - some might say its ugly. But in my opinion, it’s as unusual and beautiful as each of one of us.
